A few months ago, our aerial agency was hired to capture photos and videos of a 44-acre property. It seemed like a typical job. We flew the mission, delivered the footage, and thought nothing more of it.

Then, out of nowhere, the client called. There’s a legal case. The person living in a mobile home on the property is suing the property owner for over $400,000, claiming assets were left behind. The claimant is also accusing the property owner of illegally cutting down trees for profit. Now, our client needs us to provide the footage as evidence and to testify in court as expert witnesses.

This is when the reality of the situation really hit home. Flying a drone is no longer just about getting the perfect shot—it’s about standing behind your work, defending it, and knowing that one mistake could cost you everything.

The Legal Spotlight: Can You Pass the Test?

Here’s where the rubber meets the road: When your footage is used as legal evidence, it’s no longer just a file—it’s a target. And the opposing party is going to do everything they can to tear it apart. They’ll question your flight logs, your certifications, your authorizations, your entire history.

Stay Certified and Legal: Your Part 107 certification isn’t just a piece of paper. It’s your ticket to operate legally. Make sure it’s always up-to-date, and know the latest rules and regulations. If you don’t, it could be the thing that sinks you when it matters most.
Plan for the Worst: The worst-case scenario isn’t some far-off “what if.” It’s a reality. If your footage ends up in court, are you ready to defend it? Can you prove that everything was done by the book?
Protect Your Reputation: Your brand is only as strong as your integrity. One mistake, one violation, one complaint, and your reputation could be on the line. Maintain a clean record, follow the rules, and always operate with professionalism.
